Spirit strives to meet the demand of establishments concerned about the environment and their “green” image. RECYCLABLE PLASTIC: Spirit’s offering of stirrers, picks and utensils are made of polystyrene (PS) with the exception of our Sea-Shellers, which are produced in sturdy ABS plastic. Foam cups are made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and our drinking straws and sip/stirs are polypropylene (PP). Products made of these materials are recyclable where recycling programs are available: PP#5 for Polypropylene, PS#6 for Polystyrene, ABS#9 for ABS.
PAPER: Spirit offers biodegradable and compostable paper straws made wholly of natural paper, food-safe glue and bees wax. The straws are sturdy and long lasting in cold drinks. Customers immediately recognize that the business serving their beverages with a paper straw or sip/stir is environmentally conscious. Our straws are certified compostable by the Pacific Northwest's leading organic recycling company.
WOOD: Our wooden products project a natural appeal and have always been biodegradable.
BIO PLASTICS: We offer two different categories of bio plastics; degradable plastic and starch-based plastic.
Degradable Plastic: Our full line of straws and sip stirs are available in degradable plastic, with the exception of flex and novelty straws. Degradable plastic straws differ from traditional plastic (polypropylene) straws because they are manufactured with an additive that enables them to naturally degrade when exposed to moderate heat or light and oxygen. The additive is compliant to FDA and CFIA food safety standards and is environmentally safe.
Starch-Based Plastic: PLA is a biodegradable plastic derived from corn starch which is a renewable resource. The following products are available in this material and can be produced in most any plastic color except crystal:
